  • How to empathically confront the patient who uses rigid coping modes, and help the patient without becoming responsible for the patient’s welfare.

Workshop details

The Avoidant-, Dependent- and Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder are often diagnosed in clinical settings. Due to the greater predictability of the associated behavior and the less frequent crisis situations, these personality disorders are often initially considered as less problematic. But over the course of the treatment, the particularly rigid nature of this type of personality disorder poses a real challenge for the therapists. (Arntz, 2010) Therefore, schema therapy methods and techniques need to be adapted for these patients. The avoidant-, dependent- and obsessive compulsive patients also each need a different therapist style, one that respectively pushes more for self expression, autonomy, spontaneity and play.

This workshop aims to provide an overview of the specific methods and techniques for these patients, showing the differences in the therapist style in treating either an avoidant-, dependent- or obsessive compulsive patient.

Every cluster C PD will be discussed and specific effective interventions practised. Introductions will be followed by clear and structured demonstrations of effective interventions, followed by supervised role plays in pairs. At the end of the 2 day workshop participants will be able to identify and differentiate the different modes in cluster C PD’s. They also will be able to bypass coping modes such as the Perfectionistic Overcontroller and the Compliant Surrender, fight the Demanding Parent modes as well as the Guilt Inducing/Punitive Parent Mode. They also will be able to push the cluster C patient to express anger and to stimulate the Happy Child.

Topics covered by the workshop: Case conceptualization of cluster C PD’s; forming mode models, identifying and differentiating different cluster C modes

Therapy relationship: limited reparenting and differences with cluster B PD’s, empathic confrontation, offering care, limit setting

Schema therapy techniques: cognitive techniques, experiential techniques Imagery rescripting, chair work), home work assignments and behavioral change
